THURSDAY MORNING MIX
January 15, 2008
Scott Foley

Had a silent, special guests in studio this morning. Colorado Sound host Chris K had stopped by, in town for the day with some free time to kill. While he calls almost every Thursday, I'd only met Chris K face-to-face one time previous to this, and then very briefly during my first visit to KRFC.

One of our recurring discussions is about the responsibility of a programmer with regards to offering up a modicum of "hits" along with new and lesser known artists. Fact is, there are a paltry few veritable hits in the realms of americana, alt.country and roots music, and I freely admit to wallowing in relative obscurity for a good share of the TMM.

If I'm actually ever paid for my services, I'd certainly be open to skewing the majority my Mix in the direction of the Lucindas, the Earles and the Hiatts of our genre. For today, however, while I can't help but keep various folks in mind while I assemble a show, my own happiness is my foremost barometer. I just want to have a good time, period.

In the end, I believe it's my responsibility to both reflect and project. I intend for TMM to reflect the current state of americana music, to remain relevant in light of national charts, trends, etc. I also intend to project our attention beyond the mainstream, into the darker corners where good music also hides. It's the only way an artist (like Boris McCutcheon or Stephanie Chapman, for instance) will ever be more than a regional entity.

* Steve Earle, "Christmas In Washington" El Corazon (Warner, 97)
* Diana Jones, "Pony" My Remembrance Of You (New Song, 06)
* Boris McCutcheon & Saltlicks, "Ballad Of Rusty Strange" Bad Road Good People (Frogville, 08)

* Hayes Carll, "Beaumont" Trouble In Mind (Lost Highway, 08)
* Hayes Carll, "Drunken Poet's Dream" Trouble In Mind (Lost Highway, 08)

THURSDAY MORNING MIX January 8, 2009
Scott Foley

These Thursday mornings come and go all too quickly.

Thursday mornings find me up at around 5, gathering the final few CDs into my box despite the fact that I know I already have more than enough to build an entire Episode of the Mix. Load the car around 6 and head north up 287. These days, the sun is just rising, making for a beautiful drive.

Up the road, I'm throwing on CDs to preview tracks for play. I always consider stopping for coffee in Loveland, but never do. There's a Dazbog Coffee shop just after a new place advertising pizza and oysters ... The stretch between Loveland and Fort Collins can be a bit congested, and I'll switch between my CDs and KRFC, checking out what Chris or EP has to say.

I arrive at the station by 7. Check out newly arrived CDs, send and print out the week's reviews I've written, and gather a few stragglers from the library. By 7:30 I'll establish my space in the studio, News On the Range playing in the background, sun warming the parking lot.

On at 8, the time goes too fast. Plans rarely come together as expected. I'll either hit a groove or I won't, knowing that either way it's probably fine with listeners. I inevitably wish I'd prepared more (or less) with more (or less) to say, or wish I'd said it all better. Never feel I'm ready to go once Charlie or Aaron or Steve pulls in for Morning Dew.

It's a delicious but troubling operation for us. As an insatiable lover of music, it's all about the "you've got to hear this!" moments, and there are times when I feel some extra satisfaction for having cobbled together a good show. More often than not, I leave the parking lot, back onto 287, looking forward to my next chance to achieve groove, to correct my missteps, to pull magic from my cardboard box.

* Billy Bragg & Wilco, "Hesitating Beauty" Mermaid Avenue (Elektra, 98)
* Neko Case, "John Saw That Number" Fox Confessor Brings the Flood (Anti, 06)
* Mando Saenz, "Engine Roll" Watertown (Carnival, 04)
* The Bridge, "Poison Wine" Blind Man's Hill (Hyena, 08)

* Horse Flies, "Baghdad Children" Until the Ocean (Pest Control, 08)
* Paper Bird, "Pennies" Anything Nameless and Joymaking (self, 07)

THURSDAY MORNING MIX January 1, 2009
Scott Foley

With the holidays officially passed, I'm thrilled to return to plain ol' music on TMM. Whereas 2008 dawned with a yawn, with very few new releases heralding the new year, 2009 appears off to a promising start. Debuts this week from Eleni Mandell, Andrew Bird, Gourds, Ben Kweller, Graham Lindsey and Mark Olsen & Gary Louris. Before month's end, we should hear new stuff from a tribute to Robert Earl Keen, Lucero's Ben Nichols, Bon Iver, and more.

I also have great hopes to return some original commentary to this spot. Of course, these feelings are subject to change on a whim, so don't call the family just yet. For today, just enjoy the following fond recollection of this morning's Mix:
