THURSDAY MORNING MIX
June 17, 2010

Been airing tunes from Elizabeth Cook's Welder for almost two months now. Started off with the refreshingly clever "El Camino," and have stopped down on at least four other tracks over the weeks. And everytime I play something, I am taken by surprise how much I am taken by Cook's voice, her writing and the clean, tasteful production of Don Was. That's the way a good album works, just sneaking up on me rather than returning to the disc in hopes it'll catch.

By the way, save next Thursday morning on your appointment book for one of the more promising debuts of the year: The Beauties' self-titled debut CD. Just need to find a track sans profanity ... We'll also dig further into The Second Best Colorado CD of the Year by Chris McGarry.

THURSDAY MORNING MIX
June 10, 2010
Scott Foley

This week I will embark on a search for unexpected pleasure. After serving me well for nearly 8 years, my musical Box of Awesome is falling apart. It carries a couple dozen CDs that have made the cut, having landed in my mailbox at KRFC. After a quick listen, I will either slide a new arrival into the NOPE pile, or house it in my BoA. Of course, reason dictates that I first preview more certain things, like today's debuts of Mark Olson, Shinyribs and Chapin Sisters, followed by lesser-known maybes. But those maybes pile up, patiently awaiting their turn. On any given week, a couple of those will make it onto my add list, and a couple will make their way back to the land of NOPE.

So, this week I've committed to going through most of these least of these. I've always defined my show in part by what happens between the bigger names. I like to think that the CD by Dave McCann and the Firehearts will receive as fair a hearing as anything else. So here's to you, Danielle Doyle, Stoneyhoney and Shane Lamb. You've made the first cut. Guthrie Kennard, J Shogren and Ted Lukas & the Misled: This week you'll have your chance. With any luck, come next week's Episode, I hope to facilitate a meeting with our listeners.

THURSDAY MORNING MIX
June 3, 2010
Scott Foley

Back from New York City and the Book Expo, after a week away. For god knows what reason, today's Episode featured a good amount of cover songs. No fewer than three (3) new albums find sometimes unlikely artists paying tribute to John Prine, Shel Silverstein and Graham Nash, respectively. Crooked Fingers' second Reservoir Songs disc features a reverent take on a John Hartford classic. And a nice pairing of folkers Mark Erelli and Jeffrey Foucault offer an uncharacteristically electric run through a Springsteen (Bruce) murder song.

This Episode's Best Thing Ever comes from Audra Mae's "Lightning In a Bottle." I made lightning in a bottle / But I forgot the recipe ... I could listen to this on rotation (and I am).
