THURSDAY MORNING MIX

October 28, 2010
Scott Foley

Glad to have the new Two Cow Garage release on this week's Episode, walking the line between bombast and nuance. Their stuff has always been just a bit over the line for an early morning show, but I appreciate their heart. Speaking of which, FoCo's Drag the River has released the bare bones demo versions of their 2011 CD tracks, showing more maturity and songcraft than ever before.

On a completely unrelated front, and undiscovered Johnny Cash and Ray Charles track, recorded more than a decade ago, has surfaced. A soulful, heartfelt take on Kris Kristofferson's classic "Why Me Lord."

THURSDAY MORNING MIX
October 21, 2010
Scott Foley

"Sinister" is the word conjured by the new release by Colorado artists Munly & the Lupercalians. Their new CD, Petr & the Wulf gives a dark twist to Prokofiev's classic children's story. Peter ("Petr") and his grandfather ("Grandfater") are there, as well as the duck, the cat, the wolf ("Wulf") and the three hunters. A key member of Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Munly and co have even brewed a "pre-history of Lupercalia" on their MySpace home. Perfect for the upcoming Halloween holidays ...

Also this Episode, we further celebrate another worthy Colorado-related act, Travel By Sea, whose Two States and the Blindness That Follows is one of the strongest releases of the last couple months. Likewise, Thrift Store Cowboys' new effort almost sounds like a new band (in a good way). Lots of good stuff this week!

THURSDAY MORNING MIX

Like Diana Jones, Glenna Bell has a voice that stands out among others. Both women are definitely twang-friendly, and would probably have not seemed terribly out of place fifty years ago. The cut featured in this week's Episode is a duet with John Evans, a cover of a song written for a Clint Eastwood film of the same name.

Not a ton of debuts this week, altho we did finally get ahold of a radio-friendly take on the best song from Ryan Bingham's Junky Star.

THURSDAY MORNING MIX

Have to admit, being a card-burning Music Snob, I was somewhat disheartened by the tremendous popularity of the Avett Bros I and Love and You CD last year (similarly concerned that Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More presently rests at #3 on the iTunes album charts, wedged awkwardly between Jason Mraz and Lil Wayne ...). The Avett's Live Vol 3 returns us to the glory days of banjos, Pretty Girls and shouted vocals. It's sure to be a letdown for new fans. On the other hand, it does sit just above Drake at #23 on iTunes. And I hear Glee is considering an Avett-centric episode soon.
