THURSDAY MORNING MIX
June 16, 2011
Scott Foley

Sometimes I listen to music with the impression that what I'm hearing has a "retro" sound that I can't quite put into intelligent words. Such is the case with the debut of Houston artist Robert Ellis. The questionably helpful paperwork accompanying my copy of Photographs quoted the New York Times thusly: "Equally inspired by Jackson Browne and George Jones." I respectfully disagree. What I do hear is an unusually talented young songwriter who knows where Texas music has been. Moreover, Ellis will play a part in where it is going.

This Episode also celebrates the new incarnation of Seattle's Tony Fulghum. Formerly the voice behind North Twin, his new trio, Jackrabbit, trades in a slightly less alt. but no less impressive version of country.
