ROUTES & BRANCHES
August 27, 2011
Scott Foley

"Why new music," asked one R&B listener. "What's wrong with the old stuff?" One entire wall of my living room is stacked floor-to-ceiling with CDs, most of them from years passed. My perfect radio show with run at least three hours, mixing the old with the new. As I used to say back in Oregon, "What's new ... and what matters to you in the world of americana, alt.country and roots music." Regrettably, I have only two hours at my disposal, and tend to pack that time with the first half of that equation. One of my goals for R&B as we head into the future is to achieve a more satisfying balance between what's landed in the mail recently and what's presently lining my living room walls.

In the meantime, highlights from this Episode include an advance cut from Tom Russell, with Lucinda Williams and Calexico. Micky & the Motorcars prove that, despite their dumb name, they're more than just the little brother of Reckless Kelly. Most importantly, John Doe deserves to be considered alongside Dave Alvin for Best California Alt.country Songwriter.

ROUTES & BRANCHES
August 20, 2011
Scott Foley

Could take a couple Episodes before "You're with Scott Foley on KRFC's Routes & Branches" rolls off my tongue like it once did. Can't promise that I'll ever abandon tripping over "KRVM" here and there. Old Habits. But I'm honestly thrilled to be back on Saturday afternoons (from 4 to 6 Mountain Time, spread the word), and there is a sort of liberation in not being part of a larger "Mix" operation. I'm now a self-contained entity.

For this inaugural Episode, this return to R&B, we looked a couple weeks down the road at some pending releases. Chuck Ragan is joined by Revival Tour companion Brian Fallon from Gaslight Anthem. Laura Marling begins her new tune in the same brit-folk vein as her previous CD, but pulls the sonic curtain aside to reveal a real live band by the song's end. Even better, our second glimpse at Blitzen Trapper's forthcoming album almost prompts me to reserve a spot on my year end favorites list ...

THURSDAY MORNING MIX
August 4, 2011
Scott Foley

Unexpectedly, this marked what will likely be my final morning at the helm of the Thursday Morning Mix. After weighing my options, I decided to go all-in with Routes & Branches and allow another programmer a turn at the retooled Thursday Morning Mix mix. So next time you hear me will be for my Routes & Branches re-debut on Saturday, August 20 from 4 to 6pm. While I enjoy any time I spend behind the mic, it seems that making the drive from the Greater Longmont Metro Area to FoCo twice per week might be one trip too many. Thanks to all who have kept me company on TMM, and Follow Me!

For this Very Special Episode of TMM, we dip into a rootsy new release from the Wood Brothers. Bottle Rockets unplug for a live, acoustic set. And we still have room for some prime alt.country from Girls Guns & Glory.
