ROUTES & BRANCHES
August 27, 2011
Scott Foley

"Why new music," asked one R&B listener. "What's wrong with the old stuff?" One entire wall of my living room is stacked floor-to-ceiling with CDs, most of them from years passed. My perfect radio show with run at least three hours, mixing the old with the new. As I used to say back in Oregon, "What's new ... and what matters to you in the world of americana, alt.country and roots music." Regrettably, I have only two hours at my disposal, and tend to pack that time with the first half of that equation. One of my goals for R&B as we head into the future is to achieve a more satisfying balance between what's landed in the mail recently and what's presently lining my living room walls.

In the meantime, highlights from this Episode include an advance cut from Tom Russell, with Lucinda Williams and Calexico. Micky & the Motorcars prove that, despite their dumb name, they're more than just the little brother of Reckless Kelly. Most importantly, John Doe deserves to be considered alongside Dave Alvin for Best California Alt.country Songwriter.
