THURSDAY MORNING MIX
April 28, 2011
Scott Foley

New stuff on this Episode from Emmylou Harris and Michael Fracasso. From Owen Temple and Eliza Gilkyson. I'll pause a sec to allow you to roam up and down your radio dial to find another station that plays this variety of americana, alt.country and roots music. But I know you won't find it.

Alright. There's a good chance you were regaled with a McDonald's breakfast ad, a Shane Club solicitation, 90 seconds singing the praises of the Black Eyed Pea. But no Quiet American. No Israel Nash Gripka or Kimmie Rhodes. King Soopers reminding you it's only ten days until Mother's Day, but no Amanda Shires.

Now turn to 88.9fm, or krfcfm.org Through next Saturday, KRFC will be giving you an opportunity to gauge what a station like ours means to you. Give me a call next Thursday, or head over to our website and join our community of music lovers.

THURSDAY MORNING MIX
April 14, 2011
Scott Foley

Colorado's own DeVotchKa blurbs (collectively, I assume), "If you don't like Amanda Shires, then you don't like America." Well, no matter your brand of patriotism, between solo albums, collaborations and her work with Thrift Store Cowboy, Shires is on a roll. On her new solo effort, Shires continues to show herself as a idiosyncratic writer with a faint quirky streak and a voice that quavers and breaks in all the right places. Her talents also extend to the violin and the ukelele, and she is backed by Will Kimbrough, Chris Scruggs, coproducer Rod Picott and more.

Also joining us on this Episode are the excellent Zoe Muth on her sophomore release, something new (and band-driven) by Jeffrey Foucault, and a fine effort by Owen Temple, aided by members of Band of Heathens.

THURSDAY MORNING MIX
April 7, 2011
Scott Foley

Typically in this spot I'll highlight an artist or album which is receiving play on the current Episode of TMM. Here, I'll make an exception for Josh T Pearson. Formerly leader of TX psychedelic rock band Lift to Experience, Pearson's first solo album is a frustratingly beautiful collection of sprawling, rambling "country" songs, sung in the voice of a brokenhearted man. So, you might respond, if it's so great why don't you play it? Like another initial-user, J Tillman, Pearson's music is simply not radio-friendly, ranging from hushed, oh-is-the-song-over passages to profane howls. Not for everyone, Last of the Country Gentlemen has been as frequently damned by critics as it has been praised. For my part, I can't remove it from my player.
