There might not be a more eclectic and unpredictable artist in our kind of music than Daniel Romano. The Canadian artist is so capricious that even when aiming for straight country, his results have been well left of center (in all the best ways). A genuine collaborator, Romano has released at least a couple records per year lately, a restless output that wanders through psych, rock, country, prog and folk. Some of his best work has been alongside his Outfit, a true collective whose members have been known to share the mic here and there. Among the constants in the Outfit is singer-guitarist Julianna Riolino, who has just unleashed All Blue, her debut solo record on Daniel Romano's You've Changed label.

While not as stylistically fidgety as her work with Romano, Riolino's solo material is by no means stodgy. All Blue trades in country, with shades of pop, folk and early rock, as often electric as acoustic, with Romano himself complimenting the sessions on guitar. All Blue is not merely a distraction from a sideperson, but the collection presents Julianna Riolino as a complete artist.

Recorded largely live in studio with producer Aaron Goldstein, songs like "Why Do I Miss You" leap from the speakers, even as layered backing vocals and other post-production work ensure a more full sound. Stabs of "Bang a Gong"-style guitar give the piece an early rock edge, enforced by the spit and attitude of Riolino's vocal, rising to a shout before dismissing her unresponsive beau with a mumbled Get lost! These songs are well-rooted in guitar, though there is a significant charm added by Thomas Hammerton's keys and Anthony Ronaldi's skronky baritone sax. A steady organ sings below "If I Knew Now", a midtempo number that flares unexpectedly into a greasy guitar break: If I die before I wake /  I'll go out knowing that loving you was a mistake

Lyrically, Riolino's songs are more resentful than they are pining, targeting relationships that fail to satisfy, or paramours who are noncommittal. Everyone is fine until they're drowning in someone, she sings on the wonderful "You". A chugging shuffle worthy of Nikki Lane, the song adds girl-group backing vocals and the charming simplicity of pounding drums and a one-word chorus. With Goldstein's pedal steel, "Queen of Spades" commits 100% to the country side of All Blue's equation. May I call a spade a spade / May I tell it like it is, Riolino sings, her open-throated voice leaving no doubt that she'll step into that space without invitation. The bratty alt.country of "Lone Ranger" adds a chorus of call-and-response backing vocalists, contributing their own commentary to the verses: Stab me in the back, put a nail in my coffin

Like Nicole Atkins or Jenny Lewis, Julianna Riolino sidesteps convenient categorization, applying her brash vocals to the record's broad stylistic reach. The breezy "Isn't It a Pity" and the watery keys of "Memory of Blue" allow her to demonstrate that range. The album's closer, the atypically acoustic "Thistle and Thorned", features Riolino's most lovely and surprising delivery, as well as her most impressionistic lyric: Holy stemmed brethren spewing love between my thighs. Like her bandmate Daniel Romano, her work can be elusive at second glance, a lyrical riddle or unexpected vocal turn making All Blue much more than just another fun, country-leaning romp.

This morning I noticed that our Wordpress post-counter had clicked over to 800 - that's 800 posts since our inaugural whimper back on August 24, 2008. Much has changed over the past fourteen-plus years. Heck, everything has changed. And, while we haven't yet taken control of the world, hey we got your attention, didn't we?! I've got nothing momentous to declare in celebration of our 800th post, other than that music is still good, and that new music is still worth tracking down. It's still good to push at your musical comfort zone, and we're grateful for whatever eyes happen across these quiet pages now and then.

COURTNEY MARiE ANDREWS - LOOSE FUTURE

ROUTES & BRANCHES
featuring the very best of americana, alt.country and roots music
October 15, 2022
Scott Foley, purveyor of dust

During the five years spanning 2016's Honest Life, 2018's May Your Kindness Remain, and 2020's Old Flowers, singer-songwriter Courtney Marie Andrews metamorphosed from a lovely young Joni-esque folk songwriter to a genre-fluid gamechanger. The period also followed her artistry into the dark, as the Grammy-recognized Old Flowers addressed issues of separation and loss. On her newly released Loose Future (Fat Possum), Andrews isn't necessarily rising victorious from the wreckage, but she adopts a new perspective that carries from her lyrics to her musical choices.

Those earlier albums provided no shortage of memorable material, arguably as strong as any other contemporary writer in our kind of music. But the depths of feeling on Old Flowers were unsustainable, making a follow-up of a different spirit essential to avoid indulgence and to demonstrate Andrews' range. Part of that responsibility on Loose Future lies with producer/instrumentalist Sam Evian and the insular ensemble of Chris Bear and Josh Kaufman. Despite the smaller band, the overall sound of these new sessions is more expansive. Andrews' Spotify playist, Loose Future Inspo features artists such as Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon and the Cure.

The thrumming "Satellite" suggests an appropriately far-out vibe, even as the skittering percussion and strummed acoustic offer a more organic anchor. Andrews described this as a love song without caveats, a song of devotion and abandon to My favorite piece of the sky. With its burbling undercurrent and major-key leanings, "These Are the Good Old Days" is a retro-pop treat. The song also allows the songwriter an arena to demonstrate a touch of self-deprecating levity: People like me think feelings are facts / Falling in love gives us a heart attack. No longer surfing atop waves of sentiment, the narrator demonstrates more patience and perspective in the face of love's roller coaster.

Let's be honest, Andrews admits on "Older Now": It's not what / Our parents all said it was / No one stays together now / No one gives a damn about / Pushing through until the end. The cascading chorus recognizes this as the wisdom of age as opposed to a jaded surrender. A curious vocal oh ... oh bounces through the title track. Pedal steel pairs with a rubbery bass as the narrator learns to more confidently embrace the uncertainty of her loose future: There's parts of me I can't give away. The singer's distinct vocals are as much a part of this collection as they were on Andrews' earlier, more folk-oriented work. But, like Erin Rae or the Soderberg sisters of First Aid Kit, they're allowed more room to roam in these larger arrangements.

Andrews' vocals are also at the root of her ability to maintain the intimacy that's always provided much of her appeal. "Thinkin' On You" acknowledges the absence of a loved on without giving into melancholy. Strings and a layered vocal define the lush and lovely country-pop number. Songs like "On the Line" and "You Do What You Want" dwell in a warm, organic space. The latter is a graceful full-band track, recalling an earlier abandon: You and I in a truck bed / High off our asses. The newly adopted maturity arrives in the form of forgiveness: I still hold space for you / Even with all you put me through

Loose Future has already earned Courtney Marie Andrews a new level of review attention from sources that only occasionally flirt with roots music. The record's soulful rhythms and engaging juxtaposition of organic and processed sounds lend the project a lure of contemporary relevance. Andrews' origin story tells of her earlier stints with indie artists Jimmy Eat World and Damien Jurado, reminding us that this is not new territory for the artist. What might be less familiar is her comfort with the unpredictable. She sings in retrospect: I'm not used to feeling good ... I keep looking for new ways to be let down. On the album's bluesy closer, "Me & Jerry", she is carried headlong into her future on whorls of processed strings and an only somewhat distorted vocal chorus: I'm falling down the rabbit hole / And he makes me wanna strip down to my soul ...

Remember that time when we used to post regular reviews? Yeah, me too. What ever happened to that guy? From what I've heard, he still listens to a lot of music, and he still has a bunch of opinions about what he listens to. But given a limited amount of time, he'd rather spend that precious time listening to new music rather than writing about it.

Can't you do both? Or can't you just write shorter reviews? No. No, it appears I can't. Which isn't to say that we've abandoned reviews forever. They'll just crop up when you least expect them, much like mushrooms in the front yard... Until more hours are removed from the day, we'll continue to share our Spotify ROUTES-casts and Lists and release calendar and such.

Which reminds me of stuff that we've added this week to A Routes & Branches Guide To Feeding Your Monster. Contemporary folker Greg Brown was one of our gateway artists to roots music. Avett Brother Seth is paying tribute to the under-celebrated songwriter with Sings Greg Brown (Ramseur, Nov 4). Speaking of under-celebrated, Jeb Loy Nichols continues to release very good records that blend country, folk and soul. His next volley will happen November 11, with United States of the Broken-Hearted (On-U Sound). Jerry Joseph's 2020 Beautiful Madness earned the topmost spot on our year-end favorites list. The Portland legend's just announced Tick, a selection of outtakes and demos featuring Joseph backed by The Stiff Boys (Drive-by Truckers) (Dial Back Sound, Nov 11). Pony Bradshaw's first couple projects proved better than they needed to be. His next full-length is North Georgia Rounder, due January 27, distributed by Soundly. And finally, it's never a bad time for a new Lucero album. February 24 seems a long time away, but we'll have to wait til then for Should've Learned by Now (Liberty & Lament).
