It's becoming increasingly fun to assemble these Lookback Machine Episodes every Wednesday. Being a tireless proponent of new music discovery leaves very little time to refamiliarize oneself with the back catalog of the artists upon whose work our kind of music is built.
People like Patty Griffin. Some day, we could put together a list of our favorite debut LPs, a list that would doubtlessly feature Griffin's unrivaled Living With Ghosts from 1996. At the time, this landed upon our review desk unsolicited and unheralded, without so much as a cover or a tracklist. From Patty Griffin's sirenesque voice to her visionary songwriting, the collection was a veritable revelation. Subsequent records featured Big Labels attempting to present Griffin as more of a mainstream pop figure, though her writing often shone through the missteps, as evidenced by the eventual release of what was planned to be her 2000 album, Silver Bell. From Griffin's folk albums of the first decade of the aughts to her terrific gospel turn on Downtown Church (we include only two tunes owing to the fact that the project primary featured covers and trad spirituals). More recent sessions have seen Patty Griffin's unflagging commitment to quality writing, even through her relatively recent cancer battle. Our thirty (30) song Spotify playlist serves as a great reminder of her importance to our kind of music, both as a vocalist and a songwriter. There are few if any that can rival her.
