ROUTES-cast OCTOBER 9, 2022

ROUTES & BRANCHES
featuring the very best of americana, alt.country and roots music
October 9, 2022
Scott Foley, purveyor of dust

Remember that time when we used to post regular reviews? Yeah, me too. What ever happened to that guy? From what I've heard, he still listens to a lot of music, and he still has a bunch of opinions about what he listens to. But given a limited amount of time, he'd rather spend that precious time listening to new music rather than writing about it.

Can't you do both? Or can't you just write shorter reviews? No. No, it appears I can't. Which isn't to say that we've abandoned reviews forever. They'll just crop up when you least expect them, much like mushrooms in the front yard... Until more hours are removed from the day, we'll continue to share our Spotify ROUTES-casts and Lists and release calendar and such.

Which reminds me of stuff that we've added this week to A Routes & Branches Guide To Feeding Your Monster. Contemporary folker Greg Brown was one of our gateway artists to roots music. Avett Brother Seth is paying tribute to the under-celebrated songwriter with Sings Greg Brown (Ramseur, Nov 4). Speaking of under-celebrated, Jeb Loy Nichols continues to release very good records that blend country, folk and soul. His next volley will happen November 11, with United States of the Broken-Hearted (On-U Sound). Jerry Joseph's 2020 Beautiful Madness earned the topmost spot on our year-end favorites list. The Portland legend's just announced Tick, a selection of outtakes and demos featuring Joseph backed by The Stiff Boys (Drive-by Truckers) (Dial Back Sound, Nov 11). Pony Bradshaw's first couple projects proved better than they needed to be. His next full-length is North Georgia Rounder, due January 27, distributed by Soundly. And finally, it's never a bad time for a new Lucero album. February 24 seems a long time away, but we'll have to wait til then for Should've Learned by Now (Liberty & Lament).
